Living At Its Best - Since 1889

Clyde, NC History

Among the earliest visitors to the area now known as Haywood County were members of the militia, who came through the unsettled territory in May 1776, near the close of the American Revolution. Impressed with the rugged beauty of the area, many of these soldiers returned with their families after the colonies had won their independence and settled in the area. Descendants of these and other early settlers carried names that are found throughout Haywood County today.

Shortly after the settling of Waynesville, Haywood County was formed out of a portion of neighboring Buncombe County in 1808 and named for John Haywood, who served as state treasurer from 1787 to 1827.

Clyde was once an important holding area and loading point for shipping livestock to more populous areas of the country. The small, friendly town later evolved into a "bedroom" community for people who work outside the area.

The rugged beauty of the mountains and valleys brought the first residents to Haywood County. That beauty still attracts people to the area, but the high standard of living and the friendly people keep them here.
