AMC/Renault Alliance History

Alliance was the American name for the R9. The R11 was sold as the Encore in the US. The R9/R11 were very similar. Both cars were redesigned for the North American market. They were both total failures. (Well, I guess this depends on your point of view.)

The Alliance was named for the "alliance" between Renault and AMC. Actually, Renault had bought AMC to get its distribution network. Bizarre, since everyone knew that AMC's success was limited by its distribution network. Renault also failed to appreciate that Jeep was a jewel that came with AMC, and Jeep was quickly resold to Chrysler. The car was built in Kenosha, Wisconsin, presumably for better reception by an American clientele.

In 1983, the car was named Motor Trend's Car of the Year. The AMC/Renault Alliance was produced from 1983 until 1988, and was available as a two-door, four-door, and in 1987, a hatchback version. In 1987, the Encore became known as the Alliance hatchback. There was also a GTA version of the Alliance available in 1987. Officially, AMC/Renault stopped making Alliances in 1987, but there are rumours that some cars badged as 1988 Alliance left the factory.

Here are some pictures of an Alliance GTA I found on eBay:

This does not mean I want you to remotely link to my images. If you want to put one of my pictures on your site, or use it for a bulletin board avatar, save it to your own computer first. This especially applies to you if you're planning to post one of my images on Fark.
